Ilana Cravitz

Ilana Cravitz is a fiddler and educator based in London. As one of the brightest of a new generation of klezmer musicians, she produces klezmer projects and runs bands under the London International Klezmer Experience banner. She toured, recorded with and managed the London Klezmer Quartet for 10 years. She also specializes in playing and calling for ‘klezmer ceilidhs’ – Yiddish dance events with live traditional Jewish music. Ilana is one of a handful of professional violinists in the UK playing klezmer music in the traditional style; a link in a musical chain stretching back centuries, having learned aurally from living exponents of the tradition and through recorded sources dating back to the dawn of the recording era.

Ilana has been artistic director for international festivals such as Klezfest London, and on the faculty for many others, reaching beyond the klezmer world. She also concertizes on baroque violin and viola da gamba, as well as guesting with folk and country music bands.

Ilana has taught at festivals, workshops, universities, schools and more. She’s the founder of the National Klezmer Youth Orkester, bringing common repertoire to young musicians and their teachers around the world. Her tutorial Klezmer Fiddle – a How-to Guide is published by Oxford University Press. Her more recent book 12 Jewish Wedding Melodies Arranged for String Quartet is set to bring the klezmer buzz to a wider range of players.
