Workshop 1 Northern Swedish Fiddle Tunes
Discover tunes from the northern Swedish tradition, exploring the style through rhythm and bowing, phrasing, articulation, ornamentation, and accompaniment.
Workshop 2 Ida’s Fiddle Favourites
A taste of Ida’s favourite fiddle tunes from different traditions, from hornpipes and polskas to reels, jigs, and other gems in a Scandi-Anglo-Celtic-European mix.
Workshop 3 Baroque Dance Characters and Folk Manuscripts
We’re used to playing jigs and bourées in Celtic styles and balfolk — but how do these compare to their Baroque counterparts? In this workshop, we’ll play and explore the characters of different Baroque dances, focusing on rhythm, phrasing, articulation, and more. We’ll also look at Swedish 1700:s manuscript books with dance tunes. Note: This workshop involves reading sheet music.
For fiddle players with at least intermediate instrument skills.
Workshops can be booked per day. You’re welcome to join multiple sessions with the same teacher, but it’s not required. Each day is independent, so you can mix and match freely.
10:00 – 12:30 & 14:00 – 17:00
Ida Meidell
Ida Meidell is a Swedish folk fiddler and baroque violinist driven by a lifelong passion for the versatility of the violin. She brings depth and sensitivity to every performance. Ida has toured the European folk and baroque scenes for over a decade and teaches fiddle at traditional music courses across Europe. While Ida’s repertoire is rooted in the Swedish folk tradition, it also spans traditional music from England, Scotland, Ireland, Serbia, Romania, France, and North America.
The violin’s central role in diverse folk styles — and its ability to transcend genres — continues to inspire Ida as she explores the possibilities of the instrument. Ida is a part of the duo Hedin & Meidell with nyckelharpa player Johan Hedin. She is also a regular performer with the French Baroque ensemble Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, appearing at European festivals and concert halls.
